Ms. Julianne Davidow

Adjunct Lecturer, English Department

City College of New York, 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031

Dear Ms. Davidow,

I’m writing to introduce myself to you and to give you an idea of my background and interests. I am currently a sophomore at the City College of New York and I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about becoming a Mechanical Engineer.

My parents are originally from Ecuador, but they came here to the US back in 2000. Eventually they came up here to New York, where I was born. I was born in Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and I grew up in Ridgewood/Queens, New York my whole life. Although I have hispanic parents, my main language that I speak and write is English. My mom and dad never actively taught me Spanish but they do talk to me in Spanish, so I picked up some Spanish vocabulary along the way from childhood to adulthood. Therefore, the languages I speak are English and a little bit of Spanish.

As I mentioned earlier, I want to learn all there is to know about engineering. That is why I have chosen to study and major in Mechanical Engineering. The reason I chose to major in Mechanical Engineering is because I am fascinated by cars and how they work and perform. I could have easily applied to attend UTI and learn about cars that way, and in fact I was very close to doing that in attending UTI. But, at the last minute I thought to myself I would rather be more involved with the designing and actual building of a new car than going down the mechanic route.

A meaningful experience I had, that I think really led me in the direction to where I am right now, was when I joined the soccer team back in my sophomore year of High School. It may sound a bit underwhelming but it led to many other experiences that made me who I am. For some background information, I was a really timid kid growing up; I didn’t like to talk, I didn’t like to go outside, and I didn’t have many friends. This event is what helped me to come out of my shell more and develop my social skills. I’ve made some really good friends who I can trust and help me improve in life.

My dream for the future is to become financially free, buy a house for my mom, dad and sister (1 house for each), expose some government secrets, and donate money to those in need. But that’s a bit too ambitious isn’t it? So I guess a more realistic dream is to become financially free and see what I can do from there.

Overall I am quite content with where I am right now in life, but it can be massively improved. I am working on improving my life right now.

Sincerely,

Brandon Villa
